# Gear Cube

When I was younger I never really liked or understood how the Rubik’s Cube worked. I guess I still don’t understand it at all, but anyways. I now have an appreciation for the rotational puzzles. Looking at so many of them and seeing how they are made has given me an appreciation for them. I have even been able to solve the 3x3x3 and the 5x5x5. Of course it took me a long time but I still solved it.

This is something completely different.  The gear cube rotates on gears.  There is no internal mechanism that has pieces attached to it to make it rotate.  There is just gears on the outside rotating around a ball.  What could be more simpler then that.  I must say Oskar Van Deventer, who made this cube, is brilliant for having made something so simple looking and yet still tough to solve.

When you are rotating the cube, it will be in a position to start rotating a different way, every second side.  This is because the  rotational gears move slower then the sides.  Kind of like the gears in a watch or clock.  This makes it tricky to think of a solution but easier to solve later on when you realize what the solution is.  There is another cube just like this called the Gear Pyraminx Extreme  which is much trickier to solve but still solvable.  I don’t want to give away too much of the solution to this cube as it is very enjoyable to figure out.  I think the solving of why the solution works is just about as fun as solving it for the first.  It is one of those aha moments that make you happy inside.

After having bought this cube and playing with it at home, I finally solved it.  I figured out how to solve it for every mix up that I could think of.  The fact is that after all that I still like to rotate it around while I am thinking of a problem or trying to figure out what to do next in life.  It is one of those cubes that you can keep rotating and sooner or later it will bring you back to the start.  Which makes it great for taking your mind off of whatever you are thinking of and lets your subconscious do the work for you.

I would have to say that this cube is on my list of top 5 cubes that I have ever seen or used.  It is an absolute joy to use and to play with over and over again.  If you get the chance to add this to your collection or are starting out with rotational cubes and want something different then give this a try.  You can purchase it at Puzzle Master.  I’m sure you will not be disappointed at all.  Happy puzzling.
