Somsky Gears

Somsky Gears is based on the original Looney Gears with an extra gear. As shown in the video, the tooth numbers of the gears match: 7+13+17=11+13+13=37. This makes the gears mathematically exactly fitting. Looney Gears is a strange eccentric planetary gearing system. Whereas normal planetary gear systems are symmetrical, this one has no symmetry whatsoever. This puzzle toy looks colorful and fun to play with.

This puzzle toy features a familiar mechanism. At first, Oskar believed that it would be very hard to figure out exact solutions for this puzzle toy. It includes 4 gears inside a big gear. However, Bill Somsky proved that there are huge numbers of exact solutions for Looney Gears. These exact solutions are now called Somsky gears. Somsky’s discovery and proof showed that Oskar’s inference that there are no exact solutions is wrong. This puzzle toy works like Looney gears. The numbers that you can see on the gears has something to do with the exact solutions. You can purchase this very interesting puzzle toy at Puzzle Master.
