This is an attractive and challenging puzzle designed by one of the world’s top puzzle designers. It is of par excellent quality and made of 5 types of wood. The base is made of Ash, the light-colored pieces are Sycamore, the red-colored are Padauk, the dark brown are Wenge wood, and the yellow are Difou. The pin is made of sturdy aluminum. The puzzle is surrounded by a metal fences.
There are really 13 puzzles in all. The puzzle base is broken up into 49 small cubes. There are 9 separate pieces of various shapes and sizes with a total footprint of 48 small squares. That leaves space for 1 moveable pin.
When the pieces are installed, much as with a pentominoes puzzle, it resembles a city skyline.
When the 9 pieces are removed, there are 13 holes in various places in the base. When the pin is placed in one of the holes, the challenge is to place the 9 pieces in the base creating one of the13 different skylines. The diagram showing the pin locations, also shows solutions; but enjoy the challenge by placing the pin in any hole and solving the puzzle without the help of the solution illustrations.
If you like Pentominoes, Soma Cubes, and similar puzzles; I would give it a Difficulty Level of 7 (Challenging) on a scale of 5 to 10.
I think that is a good rating making it a great choice for a wide range of puzzle expertise, and therefore a great gift.
