No doubt about it; the Urchin is a real challenging dexterity puzzle. It is very well made of hardwood. There are six spines or arms, of which 4 are permanently attached, and of the same length; 3 of which have a ball also permanently attached, each the same distance from the center cube. The other 2 spines are removable, and even inserted in the 2 holes are longer than the other 4. The block doesn’t appear to be anything special, just a base. As far as I am able to determine, there are no magnets involved. All spines have an angle covering about half of the ends. It is a fairly large puzzle, 8 X 8 X 8 inches. As an object, sitting on a table or shelf, it is attractive and invites curiosity.
The object is simple; balance the urchin on the base, presumably on the end of one of the spines. PuzzleMaster rate it a Difficulty of 7 on a scale of 6 to 10.It’s called Family Games Urchin, but on the package there is no mention of Family Games, only Brain Baffler IQ Collection. It is also stated on the package and in the insert it is by Toys International of Montreal Canada and Made in China. The insert in the package gives no hints or solutions.
However; I did manage, with a little thinking outside the box, to balance the urchin on the block, but I wonder if my solution is legit.
I’d be interested in hearing from anyone who thinks they have solved this Urchin.
