ThinkFun Block By Block is an excellent puzzle that has been around for a long time and has bbgen made in various forms and names. It was invented by Piet Hein (1906-1996) in 1936. He was one of the greatest designers of puzzles of the 20th Century. He was a Danish Scientist, Mathematician, Inventor, Designer, Author and Poet. One of his favorite quotes was, “The road to wisdom? Well, it’s plain and simple to express: Err and err again but less and less and less.” The concept is generally sold as a Soma Cube. It consists of 27 cubes that when assembled results in a large 3 X 3 x 3 cube. The 27 cubes are put together in 6 different configurations of 4 cubes and 1 configuration of 3 cubes totaling 27. The challenge is to take these 7 configurations and assemble them into a large 3 X 3 X 3 cube. It must be noted that there are many ways to do this and there is the general solution to this puzzle. What is different with this product is that it comes with a set of 60 cards, each being another challenge or shape to construct. Just in case you get stuck, solutions are provided on the back of the cards. This is a puzzle that is solvable by youth and adults. That is what I call a great puzzle and worthy of the name “classic”. By the way, this product by Thinkfun was previously sold under the name of Binary Arts (same company, just a new name).
