I was intrigued when I first saw this Grotta artwork. It is a clever idea to use an encyclopedia in carving a mini facsimile of a place which existed in a novel. It is interesting because the miniature comes in great detail.
About the Grotta
Guy Laramée has constructed this Grotta art piece to convey the idea that the cave can serve as a temple of ultimate refuge instead of a prison. This interesting sculpture depicts a story of a cave and a maker of porcelain figurines. Based upon Plato’s metaphor of the cave, it is not only the decision and sentiments that enslave a person, it might very well be the entanglement to dreams and to all of cultural creations including art. This art piece encourages the spectator to reflect on how to escape the trap of self-reflexivity.
