I was totally flabbergasted to see this picture in the sand by Jim Denevan. I wonder how he can work on such a large scale without making his pictures lopsided. The detail is incredible!

About the Sand1

Jim’s geometric sand paintings are made with little more than rakes and sticks and can cover miles of California beach during the low tide period. I have learned that his masterpieces take many hours to complete, but can often vanish much quicker as the incoming tide erases them.

About the Artist

Jim Denevan is passionate about creating impermanent drawings on sand, earth, and ice that are erased by waves and weather in due course of time. These drawings vary in scale from smaller beach arrangements to large scale land works that are as big as a city. Jim’s masterpieces are performed primarily outside in California but also many other places around the globe. There is documentation of Jim’s work and live performances for the public that has been shown at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts.  Jim’s work has been included in many national and international publications like New York Times Magazine and National Geographic.

Thank you very much Jim Denevan for allowing us to post and share your painting on sand. If you wish to know more about his impermanent drawings, you can go and visit his website.
