Do women puzzle more ?
While doing some research about the readers of this puzzle blog I found a report from Telephia. They found out that puzzle and strategy games drive one-third of the total mobile games revenues. This alone is not very interesting but as the report continuous they state that Mobile games appeal to women. Sixty-five percent of mobile game revenue is driven by female wireless subscribers and they are the biggest drivers of revenue for the Puzzle Strategy category; comprising 72 percent of the total share revenue, while men made up 28 percent of the revenue. But can we say that women play more puzzles and strategy games than men and do they also like puzzles like puzzles like Rubik's Cube? Maybe it is time to at a poll to this blog to find out if there are more female or male readers.

Mobile World Cup Soccer Puzzle
I thought this blog would survive without any article about the World Cup Soccer 2006. But now only the best teams are left in the World Cup Soccer 2006 I found an article about a jigsaw puzzle related to soccer you can play on your mobile phone. The gameplay is the inverse of Sven's tactical shenanigans – simplicity itself. You just have to find and put together all the pieces of an oddly bear-football-blended Ravensburger jigsaw puzzle released by Handy-Games.

The Art of Puzzle Design
Lately I was wondering if there are more possibilities for designing a new Sudoku. At this moment almost every possibility is used in Sudoku design. The size of the Grid, numbers, letter, symbols, colors and so on. While searching the internet I found a very good presentation by Puzzle Master Scott Kim called "The Art of Puzzle Design" about how to invent new puzzles. It is a glimpse behind the scenes into the process of designing a puzzle. Including crossword puzzles, Sudoku and puzzles for the science magazine Discover. If you are interested in puzzle design than this presentation is a must for you.

Go mad with Crazy Cube
Go mad is a addicting flash puzzle game by 2Dplay.com. The object of Crazy Cube is to connect every pair of colored markers on three sides of a cube. On my notebook I had to move the cube around and connect the colored markers by using the touchpad which worked perfectly. I am used to use the touchpad in stead of using a mouse on a notebook. The movement of the cube and drawing the colored lines to connect a pair of colored markers just works intuitively and very smooth. All black cells are blocked. For a better game experience I recommend to read the complete instructions which are available at the start screen. Some puzzlers will find the first puzzles easy but the difficulty of the puzzles will increase after several puzzles solved.
Go mad with Crazy Cube which is easy to play ... and let the Crazy Cube not beat you !!!

Your personal Cryptex
If your are looking for a lovely personal gift for a puzzle lover than the Cryptex is something for you. The Cryptex is modeled after a device believed to have been invented by Leonardo da Vinci as an instrument for delivering private messages. A secret code unlocks the cryptex (by aligning the seven rotating tumblers in a sequence matching the code), providing access to a hidden-chamber key in which a gift-treasure is placed.
It is also possible to arrange the characters on the tumblers such that "hidden codes" (words or other character sequences that appear on other tumbler faces when the secret code has been correctly dialed in) or "dummy codes" (words or other character sequences that can be dialed in but that won't unlock the cryptex) exist.
Your (personalised)Cryptex is available at Encrypta Gifts in several versions made of different kinds of wood, additional personalization options and packaging.
You can also try to solve Cryptex online with the help of a riddle or even a serie of e-mail hints.

Sudoku Combat - Multiplayer Sudoku
Being bored playing Sudoku alone ? Well Marc Belmont created Sudoku Combat [link updated]. This browser-based multiplayer version of the popular Sudoku puzzle offers you a new experience for those that prefer a more competitive challenge. If you just want to practice solving Sudoku's there is also Sudoku Basic (one player version).
Enter a user name, or just play as guest, select a puzzle difficulty (easy, medium, hard or evil) and then choose to play against a friend or a another visitor of the Sudoku Combat website and race to the finish.
At the beginning of a new Sudoku game, your opponent's progress is shown in a grid to the right of your own, which adds a little pressure to the mix. A chat window allows for teasing and taunting or friendly chat during play.
Friendly play: To play against a friend, have one person initiate a game by clicking the "Play against a friend" button. Doing so will display a URL link to copy and send to your friend via email or instant messenger.
Settings: During play you may select to have cells display multiple numbers if you are like me and need to make little notes while you solve a puzzle. You may also turn on/off the use of colored numbers, as well as the display of the timer. An additional feature called "sticky keys" will insert the last number you typed into a cell just by clicking it.
Sudoku Combat works on Firefox 1.5 and Internet Explorer 6. It hasn't been tested on other browsers. As long as the browser is "AJAX compatible", it should work.
Good luck with your Sudoku Combat.

Puzzle Bubble - Flash Game
Via ventonline I found a very addictive flash puzzle called Puzzle Bubble which is a classic Arcade Game original by Taito in 1986. One of the great things about the Puzzle Bubble game was all of the different hidden things that were discovered by playing the game. Basically you had to clear each room of all the enemy to let you advance to the next room. You did this by trapping the enemy inside you bubbles and then bursting the bubbles. Along the way you could pick up power ups and extra weapons that were only available for that room. As a rule only one food bonus and one weapon bonus per room.

The Science behind Sudoku
In June's 2006 edition of the Scientific American there is an article about "The Science behind Sudoku," written by Jean-Paul Delahaye. In this article he explains the rules of Sudoku, its history and strategies, as well as methods of generating Sudoku puzzles are all in this article. Delahaye also deals with the maximal and minimal number of given starting squares that still guarantee a unique solution: 77 and 17, respectively (the latter has not been proven, but no one has found a Sudoku puzzle with 16 squares filled in that has a unique solution). Variations on the standard 9 x 9 Sudoku puzzle are given at the end of the article.

Award winning GeoPuzzle
GeoPuzzle is a new puzzle, invented by a former international aid worker, to help children learn African geography in a hands-on manner.
The Africa GeoPuzzle is a jigsaw puzzle map of Africa and the Middle East, with individual pieces shaped like countries. As children assemble the puzzles, they learn about each country from Algeria to Zimbabwe while building cognitive, problem-solving, fine motor, and language skills.
"Lack of geographical knowledge is a big hole in our educational system," says Bob Galinsky, a former international aid worker and founder of GeoToys. "And in the case of Africa, the hole is the size of the Grand Canyon. Clearly, we can do a better job in this country of teaching our kids about the world, and the first thing we need to do is to make geography fun."
GeoPuzzle is designed by art professor Karina Cutler-Lake for children 4 and up, the Africa GeoPuzzle contains 65 brightly colored pieces that fit together to create an entire continent. The Africa GeoPuzzle, which includes the Middle East, is the latest in the line of award-winning GeoPuzzles of major continents. Europe and Asia are already available, with North and South America due in August of 2006.
GeoPuzzles are available online at Timberdoodle, as well as at fine toy retailers (for a list, visit Geo Toys).

TileToy - a modular electronic game
TileToy is a modular, electronic game prototype for tangible LED game tiles. TileToy brings the flexibility inherent in digital software to a physical tile that people can touch and interact with. By arranging the electronic tiles, players can engage themselves in various kinds of game play, ranging from fast-paced arcade style games to puzzle an learning games.
The tiles are plastic cases approximately 2" square. The main inspiration for the look and feel comes from the heyday of the LED, when plastic hand-held games ruled the gaming world. This retro-look is fused with a more modern minimal design. The minimalism enhances the magic of cordless boxes that simply communicate with each other. In TileToy, technology is sealed within the design. The interaction is based on tactile experience where no user manual is needed.
The flexible architecture of the tiles makes TileToy a versatile platform for development of various applications from several genres. Compared with traditional tile games TileToy can take advantage of such things as changing state, animations and games where the tiles can effect the state of adjoining tiles. Simple word games can be created where each tile displays a random letter and the players organize the letters into the longest word possible. Numbers and arithmetic characters can be displayed with the player having to arrange the tiles into a sum to give a specified result. Matching games are yet another way the tiles could be programmed to act as a learning aid. Applications can be developed also to utilize the tiles purely for display purposes to show patterns, animations or even live information.
The re-programmable and constantly updated graphical information on each tile is displayed with a LED matrix system. The screen displaying the information is an endlessly versatile surface for updated visual communication. Each tile is controlled individually and can be used to transmit information on its own or in groups of several tiles. The assembled tiles transmit wirelessly their individual position in relation to each other and based on that changing information, a central computer, or a dedicated tile runs the different applications.
TileToy is an open project. Both the source code and the hardware is available via open licenses. This will allow anyone interested to create their own applications and games and feed these back into the community hopefully to spark innovation further. It may even lead to new projects that branch off to make new version of TileToy based on the original hardware. The TileToy process is available from the TileToy blog.

Colour Sudoku
Colour Sudoku is another variant of Sudoku and can be found online via Colour Sudoku. Also an explanation how Colour Sudoku should be solved can be found on their website.
It's very simple: In Colour Sudoku, instead of filling in the numbers 1 to 9 in each of the 3 by 3 blocks, you must enter 1 to 9 in the 9 boxes of each colour - for example there are nine yellow boxes. This means you have to look all over the Sudoku to see where the numbers fit in stead of each row or column.
I think the only downside is that you have to print them on a colour printer because you can not solve them online (yet) and the colours are too close to really see the diffence in a blink. Hopefully they solve these two problems soon.

The Great WordPlay Contest
A few days ago I already read an article about WordPlay on Puzzlinks. On several websites you can find clues for the WordPlay Puzzle Contest. One of those sites is Movie Online.and they take part of an internet Crossword Puzzle to celebrate the release of WordPlay. You will have to visit a variety of sites to solve a puzzle on the official WordPlay site go there and then click on "The Challenge" and then "Scavenger Hunt".
WordPlay Hits theatres June 16th 2006. This irreverent and humorous film focuses on the man most associated with crossword puzzles, New York Times puzzle editor and NPR puzzle-master Will Shortz. Director Patrick Creadon introduces us to this passionate hero, and to the inner workings of his brilliant and often hilarious contributors, including syndicated puzzle creator Merl Reagle.
In addition to deconstructing this uniquely American institution, WordPlay takes you though the American Crossword Puzzle Tournament where almost five hundred competitors battled it out for the title "Crossword Champ" and showed their true colors along the way. Thought Behind a Puzzle
By looking at the picture I thought is was just a simple puzzle, but I was wrong. This is Art and I found it on a website called Art Wanted. The fine piece of art is called "Puzzle - for print purposes" and painted by Asbjorn Lonvig with Acrylic on canvas, 201 x 139 cm (79.2 x 54,8 inches). It is inspired by company Easy Food in Denmark. This Puzzle symbolizes the human resource policy (HR) in this industrial company. The original is already sold but you can still buy a numbered and signed print on paper or canvas for just US$ 2350.00.
Well did you ever thought this about a puzzle? At least I am looking at puzzles right now in a different perspective.

ChaoSudoku
A few weeks ago in a Belgium magazine called Humo was a Sudoku variation I did not know yet. It is called ChaoSudoku. Unfortunately this magazine ended up in the paper recycling bin (what is good for the environment) but now I was unable to scan it and publish it right here. The nine, 3 by 3, squares are replace by random shaped boxes with space for still the nine digits you need to enter within the Sudoku. The rule that in each column and row must completed by the digits one till nine is still valid. Some 'Google-ing" did not help me much. Luckily I found a Dutch website called Tazuku where they explain the ChaoSudoku in Dutch. You can use Babelfish to translate the webpage or just look at the images which will explain it all. If you know where I can find ChaoSudoku's on the internet please let me know.

Build your own Rubik's Cube with LEGO
This amazing piece of work I found via The Goldfish Online. As well as Martin James Howard from the Goldfish Online as Maarten Steurbaut build a working Rubik's Cube by using Lego and are both AFOL's (Adult Fans Of Lego). Maarten explains on his website by using a lot of pictures how he designed and build his Rubik's Cube which weights more than 6 kg (6.6 pounds) and in still able to rotate. The only downside is that the internal axes, which enable Rubik's Cube to rotate, are too weak. Each cube size (in Lego) is 8x8x8 so the total size of the Lego Cube is 24x24x24. Maarten also built a smaller (4x4x4) version of Rubik's Cube with Lego and also described how he builds this one.

Hooked on Katamino
The last days were pretty busy at work, but I found some time to start with the birthday present Katamino from last weekend. The first Katamino solutions for Penta 3 and Penta 4 [pdf format 280kb] I solved very quickly if I may say so, although it costs me still a lot of time to pick the correct Pentaminos (puzzle pieces are called Pentaminos) before starting to solve each puzzle. At this moment looking for the right Pentaminos cost me more time than solving each puzzle but I know for sure that will change quickly when starting with Penta number 5. The solutions for the other Penta's will be published soon.
Happy Puzzling.
