Rubik's Bloxx Twister

Rubik's Cube twister is a new puzzle game for your mobile from Living Mobile. If the only way you could ever solve the Rubik's Cube in the real world was by taking it completely apart, and then sticking it back together with the colours in the right place. Then is game is not for you ;-)

Thankfully, it won't be necessary in this new game from Living Mobile. Although based on the Rubik's Cube, it's not the actual cube-fiddling mechanic, in much the same way that Lego Bricks on mobile didn't involve building a petrol station or moonbase.

Actually Lego Bricks is a good comparison for Rubik's Bloxx Twister, seeing as both games seem indebted to Tetris.

However, the twist with this game is that the blocks come up from below, rather than falling from the top of the screen. You have to match blocks of the same colour, which then disappear, and there are bombs to help clear them out too.

The game is out now.

Contest proves tough for code breakers

22 West BookIn May this year I already wrote an article about the Sin and Vengeance Contest. Until now the Sin and Vengeance puzzle has not been solved.

Many newspaper readers enjoy the challenge of the daily crossword or crypto-quote. Recently, this interest has ballooned into a national obsession with soduku, jumbles and other puzzles. It may be the pervasiveness of computers that spurred more of us to crave an analytical challenge, but puzzles are making appearances in other media. The Rule of Four, by Ian Caldwell and Dustin Thomason spotlighted an ancient text riddled with codes that hypnotized researchers yearning to unlock its secrets.

Sin and Vengeance, by CJ West keeps readers off-balance with plot twists, but the real mystery is hidden in the text itself. Null ciphers disguise two hidden messages, challenging the serious cryptographer and novice puzzle enthusiast alike. A null cipher includes all the letters of its message exactly as they appear. Many school children have constructed these codes for Mother's Day, listing: Marvelous, Omniscient, Terrific, Heavenly, Extra-special, Radiant. The first letter of each word forms MOTHER. The book's ciphers employ far more complex intervals between message letters. The author frequently leaves clues at book signings and on his website to help readers unravel the mystery.

Even this article includes a null cipher which just ended. The code in this article doubles as a strong hint to the Hidden Code Contest within Sin and Vengeance.

22 West Books, the publisher, is offering twenty-two cents for each book sold or a minimum of $500.00 to the first person who accurately decodes both messages. As of today, the Hidden Code Contest has been running for one year and, as yet, neither of the messages within the book has been found. To learn more about the contest.
If you're serious about the contest, the publisher recommends scouring the website, attending a book signing, and registering for the newsletter to get all the clues you can.

Astute readers will discover a hint to the Hidden Code Contest has been enciphered into this article. The key to solving this simple code is that this article commemorates the one year anniversary of the Hidden Code Contest. Good Luck!

Stained Glass Flash Puzzle

Stained Glass PuzzleAt gamedesign.jp you can find some very nice Flash puzzle Games. My favorite is Stained Glass Puzzle. You have to drag each colored panel onto the left-hand window to match colors both vertically and horizontally. There are 5 stages. Just as your are probably used to do when solving a jigsaw puzzle start with the border and corner pieces. The only thing they can improve is the used colors, it's sometimes hard to see the difference between the darker colors used. Happy Puzzling!

Lonpos - Pyramid and Rectangle Puzzle Game

LonposAfter yesterdays article about Scramble Squares today another article about an Award Winning Puzzle called Lonpos by Mic O Mic Americas. According to Dr. Toy this is a unique puzzle that challenges children to strategic games in two formats: 2D, where there are 76 pre-set problems to solve (you can set your own additional ones) and 3D Pyramids, where there are 25 pre-set problems to solve (again, you can set your own additional ones). To play 2D games, take out the 12 colorful pieces of puzzles from the box and put them on the tray. To play 3D games, turn over the box with the pyramid puzzle board facing upward. Find out the problems, set the problems and then solve the problems. There are 101 puzzles included, all in one conveniently sized box that is great to take along for on-the-go fun. It is actually possible to set up over 360,000 problems with this one pocket-sized game. Develop your child's strategy skills while improving eye-hand coordination and motor skills while they engage in creative play.

While intended for 8 year olds and up, the Instruction Manual says that it is OK for children aged between 3 and 8 under adult supervision. Therefore, in classrooms, teachers could use the demonstration board to help younger children develop the skills for which the game is intended (it has an enlarged instruction manual which is laminated to prevent its wearing out from frequent use). They could then pass a regular-sized game to each child and set a problem for them to solve. Whoever finishes first could win a small prize.

It is a good competitive game for children and adults - children against children, children against adults, and adults against adults.

Not only can it be a competitive game BUT it can also be a cooperative effort, especially where the more difficult problems are concerned (where positions are pre-determined for only a few puzzle pieces). In these instances, where one person is stumped, another might have a different approach to offer.

Rubik's Cube Improves Business Efficiency

puzzle womanA few months ago I already wrote about Gene Cooperman who received US$ 200.000 to solve Rubik's Cube. But there is more behind the story.
Researchers are striving to help companies improve efficiency by studying the puzzle of all puzzles: the Rubik's Cube. By using a lot of computers to solving Rubik's Cube.
Armed with at least 64 microprocessors and 20 terabytes of space, a professor from Northeastern University in Boston will try to do just that by recording as many states of the Rubik's Cube as possible. The project may seem like a fascination with one of the world's most popular toys gone awry, but it's actually a complex look at how better operations research could improve a company's bottom line, says Gene Cooperman, director of the Institute for Complex Scientific Software at Northeastern, who is spearheading the project.

Connect 2 puzzle

Connect 2Connect 2 is a simple but addictive Flash Puzzle game which you can play at Free Online Games. It's is some kind of memory puzzle but now you have to connect pairs of matching tiles by creating a path between them and clear all the tiles before the time runs out (there are different kind of kitchen appliances on the tiles).

This is a time based challenging puzzle game where you need to concentrate hard to find pairs of matching tiles to make them disappear. You must create a path between the two matching tiles but make sure that the path is not blocked by any other tiles.

Also the path can't bend three or more times. A level is cleared when you have no more blocks left. But, if you run out of moves, the game is over. You must clear all the blocks within the designated time frame.

Beware! A wrong move makes you lose 10 seconds and a correct move gains you up to 10 extra seconds. There are 6 stages each with a different time frame and pictures. Left Click on the matching tiles to connect them. Finally don't forget to submit your score

Best tip I have for Connect 2 is that you can also think outside of the puzzle so if you have two of the same tiles on one border you can also connect them!

Prepare for futoshiki puzzle fever

Puzzle WomanLast Saturday there was an article in an English newspaper called The Guardian. It is about a new Japanese puzzle called Futoshiki which can be linked to Sudoku Puzzles. I looked at their website but could not find any puzzle called Futoshiki, so probably it will only be in the paper version of The Gardian. Feel free to e-mail a Futoshiki puzzle or related information to Passion for Puzzles, at this moment I cannot find information about futoshiki puzzles via search engines, flickr etc..

For those how are interested please read the complete article.

If you were seduced by sudoku, prepare for futoshiki fever:

Fiendish new Japanese game, exclusive to the Guardian, begins today. It has furrowed the brows of millions, colonised the pages of every major newspaper in Britain, and even given an entirely unnecessary fillip to the career of television brainbox Carol Vorderman. But sudoku, the fiendish number puzzle, had better watch out: there's a new grid on the block.
Today, exclusively in the Guardian, the latest fingernail-gnawer finally reaches Britain. Futoshiki may look straightforward, but the experienced puzzler knows not to be fooled by appearances - that way a misplaced number 4 lies. In Japan, the game is almost as popular as sudoku; now, for the first time, puzzle fanatics elsewhere in the world can see what the fuss about.
Like sudoku, the game's enormous popularity in Japan can be explained by its deceptive simplicity. Futoshiki (the name literally means "not equal") is based on a simple grid into which, like the more famous puzzle, numbers are inserted according to a few simple rules. The numbers one to five must be placed in each row and each column, without any repeats; "greater than" or "less than" signs - literally, "not equal" to - between boxes are the only tips to guide you. Sounds easy? Don't be too sure. Today's puzzle may be simple to get you started; over the coming weeks we will be running increasingly testing teasers.
The person to thank - or curse - for this latest brain-scrambler is Tamaki Seto, the Japanese editor of the specialist puzzle publisher Kandour. She makes regular trips to her homeland to sniff out which problems are testing the capacities of her compatriots.
Futoshiki first emerged in Japan around five years ago, one of a succession of logic problems that continue to be developed in an attempt to match the astonishing success of sudoku.
"There are a few basic conditions which make a puzzle successful," Ms Seto says. "The main one is that it should be very simple; the rules should be able to be understood by everybody."
Kaspa Hazlewood, Kandour's managing director, says: "I think futoshiki has some of the same charm as sudoku. Although it's not exactly the same, like sudoku it's not a particularly difficult puzzle to get to grips with and have fun with immediately."
"In Japan, we have lots of good puzzles, popular puzzles," says Ms Seto. "But not like [the UK]. We Japanese people are not crazy like the British. It's popular, but not extreme like here."
While every major newspaper in Britain now carries sudoku puzzles, most use the cheaper versions spewed out by computers. Only the Guardian commissions every puzzle it publishes from experts, who devise each teaser by hand using only their fiendish ingenuity. Every futoshiki published in the Guardian, needless to say, will be hand-crafted rather than computer-generated. Habitual puzzlers appreciate the subtle and individual, even witty, qualities that cannot be matched by a computer.
"Handmade puzzles have been thought through logically by the human brain, so it is often possible to see patterns emerge," says Tony Bashford, syndication manager for Puzzler Media, which publishes books of (hand-crafted) sudoku.
"People begin to see the logical processes that the setter has used. Some of them say they feel an affinity with the actual compiler. They are much more aesthetically pleasing."
So that's that then. Our Japanese futoshiki masters have sweated and toiled in their Tokyo garrets for your puzzle enjoyment. It would be rude not to give it a go. Remember, all Japanese puzzles are "not equal".

HOW TO PLAY
Like sudoku, futoshiki is a logic puzzle; it doesn't require any mathematical skill. To play, insert the numbers one to five in each row and each column, taking care that no number is repeated in a particular row. The only symbols to guide you are the signs for "greater than" and "less than". Four numbers have been completed at the centre of the grid.
A tip to get you started: look for chains of boxes linked by greater than signs. Remember that no number can appear more than once in the same row or column.

Liquid Color Flash Puzzle

Liquid Colors Flash PuzzleVia jayisgames I found a variant of COLOR box called Liquid Colors by DDams. The difference is that with COLOR Box you can position the colors next to eachother, with Liquid Color, you have to build and remove walls to mix liquid colors. Which makes it sliightly different. Allthough Liquid Color is more difficult, the mix of the liquid colors is not natural. You won't get the colors like in real life. Beside this, Liquid Color will keep you puzzling for a while.

Brand New Math Puzzle

PHP Math PuzzleWhile looking for a PHP script I found a very nice Math Puzzle written with PHP. For the non-programmers just forget PHP and focus on the Math Puzzle.
The puzzle is made up of 4 boards (A through D), each board is split into four groups of four numbers. Each groups of numbers within a board have one solution - so each group of numbers have the same solution per board. Each board has only one solution. To find the solution, use the operators given under each group. These operators are both used, one is used once, the other is used twice. The order of the numbers and operators are random, the puzzle is for you to work out possible solutions per group and look for a common answer in the board. Do this for all boards to solve the puzzle. Each time the page is loaded a new puzzle is generated.
