Rubik's Numbulation

Rubik's NumbulationAs Sudoku sweeps across the globe, tightening it's stranglehold on commuters, Carol Vorderman and millions of people's DS's, numerous other pretenders to the crown have popped up, all vying to be called the Next Big Casual Mathematical Thing.

As a puzzle game with a strong tilt towards people of a numerate nature, Rubik's Numbulution is the newest challenger to the throne – a mathematical puzzle game that relies as much on your ability figure out a puzzle as it does your skill at adding up numbers in the most obscure way possible.

When you begin a game, you'll be presented with a variety of blocks, each of which has a digit on it, from 1-9. At the top of the screen, the game gives you a target number, and it's up to you to select the relevant blocks that will add up to that number. When you've reached the target number, all the blocks you've used will mysteriously vanish, and when you've cleared the screen of blocks, you've finished the level.

Unlike other puzzle games, there's no connecting groups of three here, and there's no rotating blocks, which really helps the game to differentiate itself from the pack (there's your maths joke). In later levels, the game introduces special pieces, such as negative numbers, and bomb blocks, which explode when you use them, though while these do help you to make some huge combos, they do little to expand on the basic formula of 'fastest mental mathematician first'.

There are five levels in the game, each of which is made out of three stages and a bonus round, and it's here we come to our biggest gripe. We quite like Rubik's Numbulution, because it makes us think. We like games that make us feel clever, and, because we aren't too bad at maths, Rubik's Numbulution is exactly the sort of game we're looking for. The problem is there's just not enough of it. You can blast through the 20 levels in no time, after which the game just changes to an Unlimited mode, which lets you play forever (or until you run out of time).

To say Rubik's Numbulution is average would be mean (there's your second maths joke!). A fun little mathematical puzzle game that'll really make you think, Rubik's Numbulution is exponentially better than the majority of puzzle games, but it's badly let down by a lack of levels. While the formula may be alright for the first few plays, it could really do with being a little more complex – more like a quadratic than a linear equation.

Still, if you think that current puzzle games don't push your mental maths enough and you're looking for a game that you could almost legitimately pass off to your teacher/boss as work, then Rubik's Numbulution is well worth a try. Via Pocket Gamer

Amazing Mazes by Joe

Amazing Mazes by JoeYou probably never heard of Joe Barzantny, but his work is world famous. Joe amazed already at an early stage in his life his parents and friends with his very organized and artistic displays all over the floors or on tabletops.
In his young primary years, Joey’s teachers kept bringing to his mom’s attention that her son scored so high on maze testing that he was off the charts. He also placed high in analytical/mathematical/spatial tests. And this came despite the fact that he exhibited signs of attention deficit disorder, being easily distracted and having difficulty concentrating. He was a power load of physical energy. In light of this, and knowing how much Joe loved to throw himself into maze books and find the answers in a zip, Irene encouraged Joey to make his own mazes. Alas, Joey’s first mazes were born, and he found his happy niche.
What completely astonished everyone was his uncanny knack for making his creations impulsively, before one’s eyes, in only minutes. Not to mention the artful grace of his lines and his perspective eye for the use of space…and each drawing had its own crafted puzzle! It truly spelled amazement.
Joe’s most complex maze, which he really put his heart into, was what would become his most popular one and the most published, "The Brain Maze". This fortuitous, gravitating maze was manufactured on a Sunday afternoon when he was eight and a half years old. On and off, between his ups and downs, it took him approximately one and a half hours of maze time. Significantly, this magnificent maze, along with the “Brain Teaser” were the only ones he made that had the solution inside the maze itself. (All of Joe’s other mazes have only one solution, which is typically found by an outside exit.)
If you want to read more about Joe’s truly amazing story please visit mazesbyjoe.com. You can also find there some free printable pdf versions of his amazing mazes and you can also buy beautiful mazes onlune.

Slitherlink Finally Successful?

Slitherlink puzzlesSlitherlink is another Japanese puzzle like Sudoku. It has only three simple basic rules, but can be devilishly devious. But the question is will Slitherlink finally be successful? According to the statistics of my website the number of page views for my Slitherlink pages increase enormous (last week +300%). So will this be the breakthrough of Slitherlink? I hope so because Slitherlink is still one of my favorite puzzles.
For the people who are not familiar with Slitherlink a small wrap up.

The three rules for Slitherlink are:
1. Connect dots with vertical / horizontal line and make one loop,
2. Numbers are the hints to know how many lines can be drawn around it. There may be any number of lines around cells without number,
3. Lines cannot be crossed or branch off.

One of the best online Flash version of Slitherlink is written by Luke Harrison with 75 Slitherlink puzzles (25 Easy, 25 Normal and 25 Hard). The interface is straightforward, draw a line with a left mouse click and mark a segment where no line can be with the CTRL+left mouse button or Shift+left mouse button (both options work). To help you with some basic situations which occur in Slitherlink puzzles, Passion For Puzzles has a page where you can find some hints and tips to help you solve Slitherlink Puzzles.

And to finish the best way to enjoy Slitherlink Puzzles when you are not online are the Slitherlink Puzzle Books by Nikoli, where the only publish handmade puzzles to optimize puzzle pleasure.

Hexxagon Flash Puzzel

Hexxagon Flash PuzzleHexxagon happens to be one of those games that's easier to play than it is to explain. You play as the red diamonds, and your goal is to take over the board by leaping into the spaces adjacent to your opponent's watery globules.
Hexxagon was an adaptation of the board game Othello written in 1992 by the now defunct Argo Games. This Flash version of Hexxagon is an almost identical recreation of the first level of that original game. Enjoy Hexxagon!

Sudomind - Cross between Sudoku and Mastermind

SudomindCreative Pocket has launched Sudomind, a fantastic game that is a cross between Sudoku and the venerable Mastermind. Like in Sudoku, the aim of the game is to fill a grid with pieces according to some rule; but there is an additional problem: you don't know the rule! So, like in Mastermind you will have to guess the secret rule by observing the moves accepted or refused by the program. The pieces can have different shapes, colors and numbers; and the secret rule randomly uses one of these features and involves the lines, columns or squares from the grid. At the beginning of each game, Sudomind chooses a new random rule. There are four different levels ranging from Beginner, where there is only one simple rule to guess, to Master where there are 3 simultaneous rules.

Give it a try and download the free demo version available at www.creativepocket.com. Sudomind works on all devices (PDA or Smartphone) with any kind of screen size or orientation (Portrait, Landscape or Square) running Windows Mobile 2003 or Windows Mobile 5. (It also works on PocketPC 2000/2002 with the .net compact framework installed). [via MSMobileNews.com]

Capelli 'Puzzle' Stool

The Hidden Logic of Sudoku

Sudoku grid"The Hidden Logic of Sudoku", a book by Denis Berthier, provides stimulating new insights into the popular game. It proposes new graphical representations and new resolution rules. Additionally, it sets new standards of rigour in the approach to Sudoku.
The "Hidden Logic of Sudoku" provides the first systematic perspective of the logical symmetries of the popular game. These are fully exploited to define new graphical representations, new kinds of resolution rules and a precedence ordering of the rules consistent with their logical complexity. The set of rules defined in the book is illustrated with a hundred of puzzles together with their full resolution paths. It suffices to solve almost any puzzle without making guesses or assuming the uniqueness of a solution. It has been fed into an Artificial Intelligence (AI) engine and a large database of puzzles has been processed, leading to a precise evaluation of the efficiency of each rule. The book is intended for both advanced Sudoku players (who will discover many new facets of the game and a new, systematic approach to the resolution rules) and for teachers or students of Logic or AI (who will appreciate the strict logical foundations).
The Hidden Logic of Sudoku has been published by Lulu.com and will cost you US$ 36.65 [via eMediaWire]

Submachine: Future Loop Foundation

Submachine: Future Loop FoundationSubmachine: Future Loop Foundation (FLF) is a nice Flash walk through adventure puzzle game also known as point and 'click games'. Submachine FLF features music from a band of the same name (Future Loop Foundation) and it sets the mood very nicely for another enjoyable adventure. The game features the same crisp original hand drawn graphics we have come to love from the series, as well as more engaging puzzles to challenge your mind with.
In words from the author himself: "Expect the unexpected. Fifty days after releasing Submachine 4: the Lab here is a brand new submachine for you to play. It was made especially for the Future Loop Foundation, so don't be surprised if you find elements pointing to that band and their latest album, "Memories from a fading room" within the game. Basically it's out of the main storyline, but there are a few elements that could lead you to some interesting theories about the meaning of the submachine itself.". [via jayisgames]

2012 London Olympics Logo Puzzle

The new 2012 Olympics logo for the games in London, was unveiled today. In my opinion it looks a bit dated like you probably remember from the eighties. Next to that it looks like some weird shaped puzzle pieces which can resemble "2012" but also something else if you ask me. Tonight I will puzzle a bit and try to find something else this logo resembles. Probably I will not be the only one who is puzzled seeing this logo for the first time and definitely not the last one who will try to make something else of this puzzle logo. And as they spent more than US$ 800,000 on this logo I think this is also the most expensive puzzle at this moment.

Rubik's Cube Earth

Rubik's Cube EarthIf regular Rubik's Cubes just aren't tough enough for you, try the Rubik's Cube Earth. It costs about US$ 20, and should be significantly harder than regular Rubik's Cubes because it lacks the distinguishing colors. Plus, you also have to know what the Earth actually looks like [via Geekologie].

Shuffle Flash Game

Shuffle Flash GameWell if Shuffle is a puzzle or a game, we can discuss about that, but I think you really need some strategy to solve this puzzle. Rules and instructions are easy:
- Click on one of the red balls and hold down the left mouse button.
- Drag the mouse to choose the speed (the longer the arrow the higher the speed) and direction
- Release your left mouse button to shoot and get all the yellow balls off the board before your red balls are gone to win.
After each game the balls get more close to the middle of the board which makes it more difficult and the number of balls decrease if you win.
Enjoy this puzzle game Shuffle as it is very addictive

Rebound Flash Puzzle Game

Rebound Flash Puzzle GameRebound is a bit a dated flash puzzle game. Although game play is not so smooth this puzzle game is one I like. Click on start to release the ball and divert the direction of the ball by clicking on, as they call, the mirrors. 'Eat' all the red gems by moving the ball over the gems in as less as possible moves. When all gems are gone you have to move the ball to the END. Later on in the game you will also see some black colored mirrors you can not move. Have fun playing Rebound!

Researchers Solve Rubik’s Cube in 26 Moves

Rubik's CubeRubik's Cube is a toy that most kids have played with at one time or another, but the findings of Northeastern University Computer Science professor Gene Cooperman and graduate student Dan Kunkle are not child’s play. The two have proven that 26 moves suffice to solve any configuration of a Rubik's cube – a new record. Historically the best that had been proved was 27 moves. More information via CCNmag.com
