Puzzle fanatic? Love a challenge? The Pentos app might just be for you.

Created by a retired professor of mathmatics, Pentos is a modern remake of pentominoes puzzles for your iPhone or iPod Touch. Pentominoes puzzles are educational and thought-provoking shape puzzles that can vary in difficulty, depending on what settings you start with on this app. You can make it easy or hard, large or small, and have a puzzle you can solve in 30 seconds or one that will keep you guessing for minutes on end.

In Pentos, you are presented with a gameboard, which has a size of whatever you choose to start with (again, varies with the difficulty settings). Then you are given pentominoes, or pieces, to put into the puzzle. You can turn them, flip them and whatnot, but you have to fill in the game board. Sounds easy, but the more difficult you make it, the longer it will take!

The Pentos app is definitely basic when it comes to graphics and sound. In fact, it would be nice if the game had a little more eye candy, perhaps a 3D look and a more subdued background to help one tell the difference between the gameboard squares and the pieces already placed on the board. The colors are flat and can compete with each other, leaving you with a not-so-pleasant view for the eyes minutes into a game. Some 3D design work could make this game appeal to more puzzle pros and perhaps pull some of the younger crowd into playing it, too.

Otherwise, the gameplay in Pentos is solid, self-explanatory, and definitely engaging. You can play some easy ones while standing in line at the DMV, or if you're waiting for your oil to be changed on your car, you may want to up the difficulty to help keep your mind strong and lively! Either way, it can be an addicting game, even though it's not very easy, or pleasing, to the eyes. [via examiner]

Well, maybe not impossible, but Impossible Lock (stainless Steel version) is a seriously difficult puzzle.

A specially constructed stainless steel padlock, 106 mm long and weighing 635 grams, this is a very solid construction, and is beautifully made. A real piece of precision engineering. And it does not give up its secrets easily!

It comes with a key, and also a small implement with a point at one end.

There are a number of separate steps needed in order to unlock this puzzle. One could spend quite a while on this one. Fortunately it also comes with a set of instructions!

They used to sell a brass version of this lock, at a slightly cheaper price. This stainless steel model is a new version from the designer, and is one of a limited run of 100 locks. The 2009 Rubik's Cube U.S. Nationals, which took place last weekend (14 - 16 August 2009) at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., is one of the best known annual Rubik's Cube events in the U.S. The competition involved 18 events that test skills like puzzle solving speed, fewest moves, and even ability to solve the puzzle blindfolded from memory. There were also competitions for other puzzles, like Rubik's Magic, Megamix, Pyraminx, and the Rubik's Clock. Results of the event can be found at the WCA website.

Via AdsOfTheWorld I found a nice jigsaw puzzle related advertisement for LifeLine.

Object of the advertisement for Lifeline (AFLAC’s programme to assist survivors of violence) is to develop a collection box and a direct mailer to raise awareness and funds for LifeLine. The campaign depicted the shattered lives of bombs victims with a jigsaw puzzle of a person. These puzzles were attached to collection boxes and also sent out as a direct mailer. Each jigsaw puzzle was short of one piece. Therefore, the assembled puzzle shows an incomplete image of the bomb victim. Very nice and appropriate way of advertising!

Puzzling Reflections is a new brain teasing puzzle book available via PuzzleMaster Inc.

The first activity is to cut out some pages of the book and make eight curious open cubes with card mirror surfaces on a diagonal. When a set of four of these cubes is placed in an open box the reflections seen are indeed puzzling and also unexpected. There are two sets of puzzle pictures to find by rearranging the cubes and this demands logical thinking of the most enjoyable kind. After you learned to walk, people seemed to frown on us still playing with blocks. Yeah, well, now we are grownups and we can do what we want, so we're gonna play with blocks. iStargaze is a simple but yet challenging puzzle game for the iPhone in which you draw connecting lines between stars.

When the required amount of intersecting line connection is made, you advance to the next level. The stars in iStargaze don't make just lines, but also move, make shapes and scale.

In all, there are 80 levels to challenge. You need only touch and drag away from the stars to create a line. Blue, green and yellow all create lines however different colored stars have different amount of lines which can be pulled from them. Rubik's Cube Sandwich (officially called Rubix Cubewich) is a brilliant invention.

Whoever created Rubix Cubewich) must be person with lots of love and passion for puzzles and food (just like me). Rubix Cubewich looks rather delicious with cubes of pastrami, kielbasa, pork fat, salami, and two types of cheddar. The presentation of it is great and just looks like the original Rubik's Cube. Opensky Sudoku Generator is an online service which lets you to generate printable sudoku puzzles which you can download (as Acrobat PDF files), print, and then work out with pencil and paper.

The generator produces classic symmetrical puzzles of varying difficulty levels. The difficulty level ('Easy', 'Medium', 'Hard', 'Very hard') appears on the printed page along with a difficulty factor ranging between 0.01 and 1.00 (the higher the value, the more difficult the puzzle).

At YouTube you can watch a video of Adam Morgan who solved Rubik's Cube during the free-fall of a sky-dive.

On April 11, 2009, Adam Morgan went skydiving at Skydive Atlanta. He jumped out at 14,000 ft (approx. 4.25 km) and attempted to solve a Rubik's Cube during free fall and Adam succeeded.

This was by far one of the best experiences of Adam's life and he looks forward to jumping again. However, he will most likely be jumping without the pressure of solving a Rubik's Cube during the next jump. Adam solved Rubik's Cube in around 47 seconds.
