Look carefully at the two large squares in the middle to the image. At first glance one looks like a light gray and the other one is dark gray.  Look again; both squares are exactly the same color. I tried this a couple of times just to make sure. Each time my brain was fooled. This is one of my favorite illusions.

About the Brightness Illusions

The Brightness Illusions show that the whole concept of an illusion is predicated on a misconception. This will help you realize that whenever you see an illusion, you are entertaining two realities simultaneously.

This illusion will make you realize more amazing things about the brain. The brain is naturally creative and curious machines that continuously redefine normality that is essentially contextual and historical. This optical illusion will let you realize the power of color, motion and shape illusions.

About the Author

Beau Lotto is founder of Lottolab which is known as a hybrid art studio and science lab. With brilliant, communicating sculpture plus old-fashioned peer-reviewed research, he is able to unravel the secrets of the brain’s visual system. Lotto is enthusiastic about engaging people from all walks of life in research on perception both as subjects and as fellow researchers. The “i,scientist,” in fact has led to the publication of the first ever peer-reviewed scientific paper written by schoolchildren entitled “Blackawton Bees,” on December 2010. All his work endeavors to understand the visual brain as a system defined by its past ecological interactions with the world. In this viewpoint, the brain changed to see what proved useful to see, to continually redefine normality. According to this artist, Illusions are critical windows into the mind.

Thanks Beau Lotto for allowing us to post and share your fascinating optical illusion. If you wish to know more about his artworks then you can go and visit his website.
